Every first and third Friday of the month, Queer Comrades and CNEX Salon Cafe treat you to a programme of queer films. Delving into the fabulous depths of LGBT imagery, we serve up Chinese and foreign fiction films, complemented by the most delicious Queer Comrades documentaries.
We start our queer film nights with a documentary on the nasty illness of homophobia, followed by Mainland China’s first and most iconic gay film. Xiaogang Wei, director of Queer Comrades, will be present for a Q&A intermission. Enjoy!

Queer Comrades Production
“Homophobia” is a non-rational objection to and in some cases hatred of homosexuality and homosexuals. A few rather prominent members of society are afflicted with this terrible disease: they include ex-president George W. Bush, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Pope Julius I. Through their politics and posturing, these men have used their positions of power to stunt the development of an open and diverse human society. High time for a cure! In this documentary of Queer Comrades, the folks from Beijing’s Gender Health Education Institute and Aibai.cn share some of their research on the homophobia-front and reveal some of their medicine: a round of respect for others, a good dose of being open to diversity, and Good Good Study, Day Day Up!

<EAST PALACE, WEST PALACE>
Director: Zhang Yuan, China, 1996, 94 min
East Palace, West Palace is the first Mainland Chinese movie ever with an explicitly homosexual theme. The title of the movie derives from 2 parks near the Forbidden City, notorious hangouts for the Beijing gay community during the 90s. Ah Lan, a gay writer, is arrested during one of the cops’ frequent raids on the parks. During the interrogation, Ah Lan tells his life story to officer Xiao Shi. Many of his tales seem designed to provoke Xiao Shi into challenging his own sexuality.
<东宫西宫> 故事片
导演：张元，中国，1996，94分钟
东宫西宫是中国大陆第一个同志电影。北京某公园是同性恋晚上幽会的场所，该公园附近的派出所民警小史值夜班值到无聊时，会到公园里抓一两个同性恋来审一审，在他们交待自己的种种“活动”时，他会打骂一番以消闲解闷。某晚又去抓人时，欲拒还迎的阿兰被他铐回值班室。审问过程中，小史的言行不乏对阿兰的歧视和侮辱，但阿兰丝毫不为自己是同性恋难为情，反不动声色地讲起过往经历，并用死囚与刽子手的故事表达他对小史的爱恋，慢慢地，小史发现他的心中原来也藏有一座断背山。

Taxi Direction : Guangqu rd. pass East 4th ring rd. DaJiaoTing bridge, keep going east and pass 2 traffic lights, see on the left side “Image Base” (with red lights) then make a U-Turn. Drive into Image Base go straight, turn left to the end when meet the first road. There is a 3 floors warehouse, we are on the first floor.
Closest subway stations : Shuangjing or Sihui. From Shuangjing you have to take a taxi go straight east. From Sihui you need to go south and turn east under the Dajiaoting bridge.
